Kantbrief 2 van 2023
The main topic in his “Kantbrief” the color yellow with its variants, such as orange. There is an article about the natural dyes that give the color yellow and an article about the yellow laces in the hulls from Urk. Furthermore, the needle lace work “Het Goudlakenkamp” is looked at technically with Agnes Stevens. In addition to the floral patterns, there is a nice tatting pattern and a nice 3D bobbin lace pattern of a mouse. To my great joy an article about the differences between Flemish lace and Binche, which also contains an explanation about how to draw the snowflake ground of the Binche. Now I can give that a try.
The “Kantbrief” is a publication of the National Organization of Lace Art ( LOKK ) and is only for members.
Membership costs approx. € 20.00 per year.
Magic beween snowflakes and Torchon by José van Pamelen
This book was released in 2020. Joseé van Pamelen has written more books with bobbin lace patterns. This book combines or rather integrates the snowflakes, which originally occur in the Binche and Flanders side in the Torchon. This is done in squares, all made with 22 pairs of bobbins and linen thread 50/2. This makes it easy for many people to make these patterns and to master this technique. A pattern of a band is also given, in which a number of squares can be combined.
No explanation is given in text, but technical drawings with some necessary detailed drawings in the color code.
Personally, I'm not happy with the colors used in the lace and the way the patterns and technical drawings are drawn. I myself usually draw my patterns with accompanying drawings on the computer, which gives a completely different look.
The book is for sale at Lacedesign by José and costs €31.95.

In addition, there is an article about a large needlework about the Golden Bedsheet Camp, which was set up in the 16th century by the French king to entertain the English king. That's how it was in those days. Furthermore, an introduction to 2 lace making gentlemen. Both gentlemen do not make simple bobbin lace, but work with whole mountains of bobbins and preferably also with thin yarn. Creative Design in Bobbin Lace by Ann Collier
I received this book a few months ago from someone who is cleaning up. Now I may have to do that too, but I'm not there yet. So the book was gratefully accepted. Ann Collier is a gifted lace designer. In this book, besides the history and technique of bobbin lace, it also describes designs. She gives examples and explains how those designs are made, what they consist of. This way you get an impression of how a design works and how you could do it. At the end of the book she gives a comprehensive overview of the development in lace design and how it was approached in the different regions. The book was published in 1982 by B.T. Batsford Ltd in London. The book is still for sale through Amazon or second-hand bookstores.

Le Luxeuil Dentelle Mixte à l’Aiguille et au Lacet Mécanique door Mick Fouriscot en Huguette Morel
This is a textbook, in which one learns how to shape the ribbons and then apply the different needle lace stitches. Soon larger areas of stitches are offered. This is quite difficult for beginners, especially to keep the rows of stitches neatly straight. But when you've worked all this out, it turns out that you've created a beautiful 3D flower. I have to say I didn't do this. Those large areas were and still are too difficult for me. I'll stick to smaller areas.
Although the book is written in French, it is a clear explanation especially along with the drawings. Highly recommended.
The book is still for sale, but you have to search. Watch out for the price, which is sometimes very high.
Dentelles du Queyras et des Vallées voisines byr Claire Le Goaziou
This book describes the various laces from the Dauphiné, as well as those from other valleys such as the Queyras, the Varaita and the Maurienne. Als the use of laces in local clothing is described. Mainly the aces were used for caps, but also for collars and shawls. Characteristic for the Queyras are the pillows or the 'tambours' and the bobbins. The 'tambours' are rollerpillows. They are not very wide, but have a large diameter. The sides are made of wood and beautiflly decorated with woodcarving. The bobbins are fat, especially the bulbs. This is good because the laces are mainly worked with linen 30 or 40. So a little bit weight is needed. The laces are worked without a pricking. When needed a striped fabric is used to get the edged straight. Pins are only used at the edges of the lace and sometimes around a motif. A remarkable issue is, that although the lace is made on a rollerpillow, the closed method is used. So when making a half stitch or a whole stitch the stitch starts with a cross and ends with twisting the pairs. this is not what I expected.
The book is mainly meant to be read and contains a lot of information. Only 7 patterns are given.
It is still available via www.artisanat-queyras.fr. Price € 16,00
Die Spitze nbr. 1 of 2021
The first issue of this magazine from the Deutsche Klö ppelverband is somewhat devoted to Corona. Of course the congress has been canceled for the second consecutive year. This is now being replaced by a mini-conference in Übach-Palenberg to at least allow the General Members' Meeting to take place. It also contains patterns of decorations for mouth masks. Of course also regional news about the collars of the “Bauhaus Mädel ” and a report of the 31. Klöppeltage in Annaberg. Furthermore, patterns for old and young, book reviews and the courses. Die Spitze is a 4-monthly publication for members of the Deutsche Klöppelverband. Membership of this association costs € 50.00 per year.
Lace from Flanders and ’s Gravenmoer
The subtitle of this book is “ The diagonal half stitch ”. It describes how in ’s Gravenmoer the Flemish Torchon developed into the typical ’s Gravenmoerse lace with the diagonal half stitch. It contains a thorough explanation of the different diagonal half stitches. There are, with all variations, a total of 7. Other parts from Flemish laces, such as the Binche, are also examined to see whether they also have elements in which this diagonal half stitch occurs. Furthermore, extensive attention is paid to the history and the ways in which lace was and is used in the hats.
Then the technique comes up. In addition to the diagonal half stitch in various shapes, the fan, the “Duitse plaatje” and the “perkinneke” are also described.
In addition to old patterns found in ’s Gravenmoer and the surrounding area, modern designers were also chosen for the lace patterns. This brings this old lace to new life. A small disadvantage is the sometimes somewhat vague print of the patterns, which is therefore somewhat difficult to make.
The book was published in 2002 by the LOKK (National Organization Kant Kunst Nederland) and was edited by Yvonne Krijgsman and Hanneke Troost.
Unfortunately the book is sold out and very difficult to find second-hand.
International Lace Dictionary by Edith Spee, Ineke van den Kieboom en Johan Coene
This reference book contains 630 lace terms with translations. It is divided into 2 parts to include all translations. Both parts are based on a numbered English glossary with 7 translations. To make it easy to find the English term, there is a separate glossary of the other 12 languages with the number under which it can be found in the English list. I regularly use it when I need to translate something, but also when I don't understand a lace term in a book in another language to find the Dutch translation. I say Dutch, but actually the terms in the Dutch list come mainly from Flanders. So that sometimes I have to convert it again into the Dutch term that is more familiar to me.
It is a spiral-bound booklet that was self-published by Johan Coene in 1998. It is no longer availlable. You have to look for a second hand copy.
Nyytinki by Inga Pemtikäinen and Irma Leimulahti
I bought this book when I was busy making bobbin lace without pricking also called freehand lace. You are supposed to makeit without a pattern on a pillow or better a roll covered with striped or checked fabric. You do have a diagram or thread drawing at your disposal, but you have to do it with only that. Usually I do it on graph paper, so that I can determine the width and the distance of the pins along the side. That is basically the only place where the pins are put.
This book deals with lace or patterns from Karelia and from the islands of Tytärsaari, Lavansaari and Seiskari, which lie in the Finnish Sea. Inga Pentikäinen covers the laces of the Karelian Isthmus, which is now part of Russia. These are mainly laces of white or semi-bleached linen with some colored decorative thread here and there. She uses tread drawings to indicate the pattern.
Irma Leimulahti covers the laces of the islands. These laces are white or multi-colored. She uses working diagrams that are more based on lace prockings, as we know them.
In both cases, the colored threads or pairs are indicated by colored lines. Indispensable are the photos that accompany each pattern, so that you can see what the lace looks like. This will help you make the laces properly. Just keep in mind that both ladies are probably very experienced in making bobbin lace without a pattern, while you are probably struggling to tension the pairs properly so that the lace will look a bit like the photo. In my experience that is sometimes very difficult and the more you try, the less it seems to work. It helps if you do this type of lace for a while so that you become more experienced with it.
Klöppelspitzen. Reprint nach dem Original von 1909
This book I got from a ex-student, who knew that I owned the original from 1909. It is the 2nd part of a series of 3 reprints of old lacebooks of the “Verlag Otto Beyer” from Leipzig.
It is not quite a real reprint. The old gothic letters are used in the text, just like the prickings printed white on black, but the background of the images is blue, while the one in the original is black. But to be honest the laces are better on the blue.
A student would like to make a piece out of it, so I brought it out. Fortunately, I have the option to print the pricking in negative, so that it becomes black and white again in the normal way for us. I think that works a little easier, especially if you mainly make lace in the evening.
I am now making the piece so that I know which difficulties are inthere. You can read in Dutch how far I am with this on my blog.
Die Spitze 2 2020
Die Spitze is the magazine of the Deutscher Kl¨ppelverband. It is published 3 times a year. This time it was announced in the magazine that the conference in Bad Pyrmond has been postponed for a year to 2021. The conference that was to be held in Hildesheim in 2021 has been canceled. This time, in addition to extensive annual reports from various committees and working groups, there is a lot of attention for the results of the competition that was held this year. After all, everyone had sent in all their work before everything came to a standstill. The works have been judged and prizes have been awarded. All this is described in detail. Since there was no exhibition this year, all entries have been included in the magazine, including those without a jury report.
The magazine is always divided into different sections. In this case the congress, then the working groups, national and regional and international. Each section is full of information about what is happening in those different areas. Of course there is also a section “ Klö ppelbriefe ” with nice patterns. That's not the biggest part. That is of course the section with news from the country and the different areas, where really everything happens.
Enclosed with this issue was the course offer for next year. All nice courses, but unfortunately not much anymore in the border region with the Netherlands, of the 32 only 7. Then despite the fairly low course fee € 150.00 for members is an expensive affair. After all, travel and accommodation are not included.
Kantbrief nr 2 of 2020
The “Kantbrief” is the magazine of the LOKK, the Dutch lace organisation. It is published 4 times a year. This second issue states that unfortunately the remaining activities of this year will also be canceled. No General Meeting of Members this year and perhaps worse for many: no lace market . Of course there are also a number of nice patterns. If you become a member of the LOKK, you will receive the magazine every 3 months. For an extra € 2,00 English translation by e-mail is possible.
“Kantklossen slag voor slag” by Zus Boelaars
This book was, to my knowledge, the first book that has been published in the Netherlands on bobbin lace since the book by J.P.A Brandt from the fifties of the last century. The first edition was in 1977 and the second already in 1979. It is a real textbook with 20 lessons, in which the technique of bobbin lace is explained.
The designs are simple and a bit outdated here and there, but still great for learning lace making. The basics of the torchon and guipure are treated and explained clearly. Still recommended.
The book is only available second hand.
Textiel Plus 251 Spring 2020
This quarterly magazine is about textile arts in the Netherlands and abroad. It is not specific for lace. In fact, there is very little lace in it, not even lace art. I asked about it once and got the answer: "You have your own magazine". Too bad a missed opportunity! Of course we have the Kantbrief, but it does not always contain anything about lace art or a lace artist. Textiel Plus could jump into that, but they are not planning to. Now and then there is something related to lace in it, because the artist then envisions transparency or fragility, as in the Dancing Flowers by Ulrike Berge. This Swedish makes installations and uses, among other things, solofleece, a water-soluble material, on which she often embroiders by machine. The installations are sometimes so big that you can walk in them.
This is just one article from this issue. There are of course more nice articles in it, such as about Sara Vrugt's 100,000 trees project and Martine van ’ t Hul's studio.
Birds and Animals in Honiton Lace door Saikoh Takano
This book contains all kinds of patterns of birds and animals in Honiton lace. I myself don't make much or actually no Honiton. The yarn is too thin for me, especially if it also needs to be sewn. They start out fairly simple and get more complicated over time. The pricking is given in full size and suitable for Egyptian cotton 180/2. The used fillings are explained in the back of the book. 2 photos were taken of each pattern, one from the front and one from the back. The latter is done to give the worker the opportunity to compare this with the photo while working.
The patterns are also given a clear sequence and direction of work in order to get the best possible result.
It all looks good. I cannot judge whether everything is completely correct, because I have not yet made anything out of it.
The book is in English, German, Dutch and French and is still available through Amazon UK, new and second hand. Both at huge prices, certainly new. There they ask £ 107.08 for. I wouldn't buy it for that price.
Idrija narrow tape lace and double stitch
The book Idrija narrow tape lace and double stitch is published by the Laceschool (Cipkarska Sola Idrija) in Idrija, Slovenia. It covers the Idrija side with the narrow cloth stitch tape, which can turn into a whole stitch tape. The various technical parts of the lace are explained with simple but fun patterns. The lace is fun to make and you can make nice designs with it. The book provides plenty of examples to work with. The book is in Slovenian and English and is still available through the school's web shop www.cipkarskasola.sl
Die Spitze 1 2020
Die Spitze is the magazine of the Deutscher Klöppelverband. It is published 3 times a year. This time it contains plenty of information about the convention, which is held every year somewhere in Germany. This year it would be in Bad Pyrmont, but it has been moved to next year. That had been known for some time, so it was a bit of a strange sensation to read in the chairman's foreword that they were almost ready for the convention in Bad Pyrmont. But yes, it is a very well-tended magazine with a long production time, approx. 6 to 8 weeks. Fortunately, a letter had been inserted with the announcement and explanation of the postponement. The magazine is always divided into different sections. In this case the congress, then the working groups, national and regional and international. Each section is full of information about what is happening in those different areas. Of course there is also a section “ Klöppelbriefe ” with nice patterns. That's not the biggest part. That is of course the section with news from the country and the different areas, where really everything happens.
Kantbrief 1 2020
De Kantbrief is the magazine of the LOKK, the Dutch lace organisation. It is published 4 times a year. This time there will be several events, which have unfortunately been canceled due to the corona epidemic. There is a nice article about the painting “ Interior ” by Cornelis Bisschop. This painting features a bobbin lace cushion with bobbins. It hangs in the Dordrechts Museum. Also a report of a bus trip to Erbach. Of course there are also a number of nice patterns. If you become a member of the LOKK, you will receive the magazine every 3 months. For an extra € 2,00 English translation by e-mail is possible.
’s Gravenmoerse kant by Paula van Astenrode-Verzijden
I've been thinking about including this book for a while. It has been published by the NKO as “ teaching material ” at an application day in 1994 about Gravenmoers lace. But to be honest. When I work Gravenmoers lace, I always take it from my bookshelves. Refreshing how the pairs go in the special half stitch diamonds and even more often about the way is the “Duitse plaatje” done. In short, a beloved booklet, which clearly shows its many use over the years.
It is a booklet bound in a ring binder. It is no longer available new, maybe second-hand.
Solstiss, The seduction of lace by Anne Kraatz
This booklet gives a good impression of the types of lace that Solstiss makes.
Anne Kraatz starts with a brief description of the company's origins. Then the history of the lace follows in a nutshell. It also pays attention to the history of the machine lace.
Solstiss was founded in 1974 by 5 lace manufacturers who wanted to join forces to keep the old industry going. They succeeded. Solstiss predominantly uses Leaver looms. These were developed in England by the Leaver family in Nothingham at the beginning of the 19th century and were soon exported to Calais.
After this brief explanation of the development of Solstiss, a number of photos of beautiful lace creations follow.
I took this booklet out from the bookshelves after my visit to the exhibition “ Art of Lace ” in the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. The couturiers whose creations were exhibited here also make use of Solstiss
The booklet was published in 2006. The text has been translated into English from French. Unfortunately it is no longer available. You have to come across it 2nd hand by chance.
Dick durch dünn by Ulrike Löhr.
This magazine format book was published by the writer herself in 2015. She plays with thick and thin thread in Binche grounds. Normally Binche is very fine, but here the grid is taken a lot bigger. It is predominantly made with thin threads, but thick threads are used in certain places. These are not used as a gimp, as in many laces, but are included into the ground. It probably took a lot of thinking, drawing and work to get the thick threads to form the patterns they do now. To do this, they must be hung in the right place.
It is clearly indicated with which thicknesses must be used. The book also has a clear structure and division from easy to difficult. Certainly on the first laces, which are the simplest, a clear description of the difficulties is given. Ulrike Löhr works a lot with thread diagrams in this book, because then it is clearly visible what the thick threads do. Only black and white working drawings are used for the design of the laces. At the back of the book, for the different grounds used in the book, the international color code is used in the working diagrams.
The patterns are often narrow and wide insertions. Part of the pattern is given, which you can then copy to lengthen and reverse before the end of the insertion. In addition, an oval, some wide rectangles, an edge for a round rug and an edge for a hexagonal rug.
If you like an experiment and a different use of lace, this book is definitely recommended.
The text is in German and English.
The book is still available and costs approx. € 24.00
Syllabus Binche 1 by Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billiet
This syllabus is a folder with 8 patterns. Together they form a Binche course for self-study. This is done very thorough, starting with the most common part of the binche, the big snowflake. A practice lace is given for the technical parts, on which the part can be practiced in different stitches and possibilities. For example, 3 possibilities are given for the large snowflake and the Binche pea. An in-depth study is possible with this syllabus. For a somewhat superficial study you can quickly switch to the application of the treated technique in the pattern, 6 handkerchiefs and 2 round doilies.
The texts are short and in Dutch, French, German and English. There are clear working diagrams of the technical parts and the complete laces in the international color code. The patterns are printed on brown cardboard and unfortunately quite light. This was done at the time to prevent copying, but that makes it difficult to work on these prickings. Personally, I prefer to leave the original prickings intact.
This syllabus was published in 1985 by the Kantcentrum in Bruges and is only for sale second-hand.
Wiener Spitzen by Hartmut Lang
This book is adapted from a course by the “k.k. Anstalt für Frauen-Hausindustrie” in Vienna. This course was the continuation of the “k.k. (kaiserlichen königlichen) Zentral Spitzenkurs”. In 1908, parts of the Habsburg Empire, such as Slovenia and Bohemia thought that there was too much regulations about their laces centrally in Vienna. That is why the training was changed to the “ k.k. Anstalt für Frauen-Hausindustrie”, only for the German-speaking parts of the empire. Hartmut Lang has the original patterns from the course in the archive of the “Höhere Bundeslehranstalt für Mode und Bekleidungstechniek sowie künstlerische Gestaltung”. He decided to reconstruct the edges with a number of lacemakers and to make working diagrams in the international color code. page with the lace, pattern and working diagram

The text is in German, English and French. It is published by Barbary Fay in 2008 and is still available through the publisher or bol.com.
Threads for Lace door Brenda Paternoster
This is an overview of and especially a comparison between approx. 1900 bobbin and needle lace threads. The comparison system is based on the number of turns per cm.
At the beginning of the booklet is a brief explanation of the types of yarns, their origin and properties. It is also schematically indicated which thickness of yarn can be used for which type of lace at which distance between the pins.
If you don't have the indicated thread, this is a very useful tool for finding a replacement thread.
I have edition 5, but edition 7 has already been released. This is available from Barbara Fay by the Brugse Boekhandel in Bruges.
The booklet has a soft cover. I use it regularly, which certainly can be seen in the photo.
El encaje de Hinojosa Historia y técnica by Mariña Regueiro
An excellent book on the history and technique of the Hinojosa lace. The writer has done an extensive study of the lace. The first part of the book is about the development and history of the Hinojosa del Valle lace. Interesting to read.
As far as the technique is concerned, it offers numerous options for the tapes. That's what the lace consists of. Tapes which circle around each other to form the pattern. In addition, the design as it is done in Hinojosa and the working method of the curves and corners.
After this technical explanation the patterns follow. Doilies, rugs, fans, collars, corners and edges for handkerchiefs or rugs. In short, something for everyone. No figurative designs. They are not used in the original.
But with the technical explanation and the wide choice of tapes, you can also make them yourself. For me a favorite lace to be creative with. rozen in Hinojosa kant
La Encajera nr 16 of 2001
A Spanish magazine about lace from 2001. I haven't had it that long. Obtained from a lace legacy of an acquaintance along with a few other issues and a number of Spanish and Catalan books. There is a nice story about a lace worker, who received a box with bobbins and pins from her grandmother with the announcement that she would only use them for a special pattern. One day she is instructed to make a special pattern. It doesn't quite work out until she remembers that box from her grandmother. She takes the bobbins and pins from that box to try again. Then it all goes without a hitch. This story was written by an 11 year old girl.
