Drawing an insertion in Guipure.
Also before we can draw an insertion in Guipure we have to make a sketch in Illustrator.
The lines are tapes; two of them straight down and 2 meandering in between. After the decision of which thread is to be used, the zigzag can be drawn. Decide how far apart the points of the zigzag should be and what the width of the tape should be.
For instance you draw a zigzag 6 mm wide and the points 4 mm apart. this will be for cotton thread nr. 80 with 4 or 6 hanging pairs in the tape. To draw this you set the grid on 2 mm. Then draw a small upright zigzag with the points 4 mm apart and 6mm wide 2 times going up and down.
To make it exact round the points in the palet “lines”. This is selected. Then choose a new brush in the panel “brushes”.
Click in the reply window on a new pattern brush. Our zigzag appears at the bottom of the window “brushes”.

In the sketch now the lines are selected. We click on the zigzag in the “brushes” palette and the lines turn into zigzag lines. To get the points of the zigzag touching each other on the places where they come together, we have to move the “lines” a little bit. Be careful. Select the line you want to move and use the arrows on the keyboard to move it around. This is more accurate that using the mouse.
In the spaces between the tapes we like leaves for decoration; in the centre a “flower” of 4 leaves and at the sides 2. The leaves are drawn with the pen from the toolspalet. Start drawing the first half of the leaf from the
beginning to the end. Stretch the handles at the ankerpoint so fare that the wanted curve is shown. After this move the pen towards the last point again (beside the pen a little arrow shows up), press the alt-button, click and stretch the handle
upwards, so that it has about the same angle as the first one. Then close the leave by clicking on the start.
Copy the leaves and move them to their places. You can form groups of leaves and move them together to their place.
The result, your pricking will be this:
